Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent organizational skills (ability to manage multiple tasks and activities, ability to adhere to a schedule)
Excellent communication skills in both English and ASL
Advanced to excellent abilities to transfer meaning from one language to another
A high degree of comfort working from ASL to English
A high degree of comfort providing interpretation in setting with multiple participants communicating in ASL
Ability to collaborate and work in teams
Effective interpersonal skills
Strong public speaking/presentation skills
A high degree of comfort providing interpretation in front of large audiences
Ability to maintain professional boundaries
In depth knowledge of the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct, familiarity with other potentially applicable codes of behavior
Strong personal and professional ethics and decision making skills
Basic computer competencies (email, word processing, internet browsing)
Basic knowledge of videoconferencing software (Zoom, Teams)
Broad general knowledge base
Ability to see interactions through multiple lenses
Ability to manage complex personal emotions and maintain professionalism while on the job
Strong self-care skills
Required Education and Experience:
Minimum of 2 years paid ASL<>English interpretation experience in a variety of settings
Paid experience providing ASL<>English interpretation as part of a team
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree
College degree or other professional training in ASL<>English interpretation
Microsoft software (Word, Excel)
Experience working in deaf/hearing teams
Certification(s)/License(s):
Valid driver’s license and insurance required
ASL<>English interpretation certification by a nationally recognized certifying body preferred
Completion of RID/NAD written test required
ODE Educational Interpreter License preferred (5 year associate or long term sub)
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Ability to move arms, hands and wrists to produce the 4 parameters of signs (handshape, location, palm orientation and movement)
Ability to articulate English verbally or produce written English
Ability to access both source and target language
Ability to sit or stand for periods of time up to an hour in length
Ability to move independently from parking lot to physical assignment location
Ability to rapidly comprehend and respond to information received by spoken or visual means
RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION IS REQUIRED
Compensation:
Compensation begins at $21.36/hr ($45,000/year) and is based on certification(s), breadth of experience, and degree of independence/versatility.
A successful candidate must be willing to provide interpretation services onsite, individually and in teams, as needed for various customers throughout Central Ohio and beyond.
