Job Title: ODRC Deaf Services Coordinator

Job Summary:
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections d/Deaf Services Coordinator will act as lead in the provision of services to incarcerated d/Deaf individuals housed in the Ohio prison system, including the Corrections Reception Center. They will be the point person for ODRC staff regarding services to incarcerated d/Deaf individuals and will work closely with the prison ADA coordinators. They will also work with the ODRC contract liaison on site and staff at ODRC responsible for administration of our contract.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Follow all Hallenross policies and procedures as noted in the employee manual
Check and respond to Coordinator emails (interpreting@hallenross.com) and texts daily
Follow all policies and procedures set by ODRC for contractors in general and for our contract specifically
Check and respond to ODRC and institution specific email and texts daily
Maintain Hallenross prison policy manual
Work in collaboration with onsite interpreter and/or Hallenross Coordinator on Duty to ensure incarcerated persons access to prison services, classes, etc.
Provide support to interpreters in assigned teams as needed
Monitor arrival of new d/Deaf incarcerated persons
Provide general advocacy for incarcerated persons across all prisons, including problem solving at the system and individual level
Coordinate and/or teach ASL classes for incarcerated persons
Participate in new staff orientation for prison employees by providing information regarding deaf culture and working with deaf incarcerated persons
Participate in ADA and other ODRC requested trainings across prisons
Act as a liaison to the contracted prison technology provider regarding technology provided to deaf incarcerated persons
Conduct language assessment of new deaf incarcerated persons
Complete contractual pre-release activities for deaf incarcerated persons
Act as Hallenross liaison to ODRC for all things contract related
Participate in Hallenross staff meetings, both group and one on one
Participate in meetings with ODRC contract liaison and/or administrators
Submit required paperwork in a timely manner

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree (Deaf Studies, Social Work, or Criminal Justice preferred)
Personal experience interacting in both the d/Deaf and hearing communities
Experience evaluating sign language competency
Minimum of 1-year paid employment experience with leadership or administrative responsibilities
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Experience:
d/Deaf lived experience
ASL teaching experience
Paid ASL<>English interpreting experience
Case Management Skills
Advanced to excellent abilities to transfer meaning from one language to another
In depth knowledge of Disability Law (ex. the Rehab Act of 1973, ADA and ADAAA)
Understanding of Ohio’s prison system
Understanding of Deaf prison populations and needs
Knowledge of resources for community re-entry
Microsoft software (Word, Excel)
Certification(s)/License(s):
- Valid driver’s license and insurance required
- ASL<>English certification by a nationally recognized certifying body preferred
Physical & Cognitive Requirements:
Ability to move independently from parking lot into prison and across the yard
Ability to press a personal emergency alert button
Ability to push/pull a (heavy) metal door
Ability to sit or stand for periods of time up to an hour in length
Ability to articulate signs
Ability to articulate English verbally or produce written English
Ability to access both source and target language
Ability to rapidly comprehend and respond to information received by spoken or visual means
Ability to operate a computer
Ability to generate, organize and/or review print and/or digital documents (text or numerical) for periods of time up to 7 hours in a day

RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION IS REQUIRED
ABILITY TO MEET ALL THE ODRC AND MTC REQUIREMENTS FOR PRISON BADGING AND ENTRY INCLUDING A BACKGROUND CHECK
Compensation:
Compensation begins at $24.50/hour ($50,960/year) and is based on certification(s), breadth of experience, and degree of independence/versatility
